Protect your HVAC equipment during unstable weather and changing seasons
Residents of four-season climates in the United States know that cool temperatures can be expected from Thanksgiving to Easter (and sometimes beyond). This is true for Philadelphia residents who need air conditioning as much as they need heat during the winter months. This can make it difficult to keep your HVAC system working properly. However, by taking care to protect your system from a variety of weather conditions, you can rest assured that your home will remain comfortable.
Keep the heater turned on
When the weather forecast calls for a day or two of warm weather, it can be tempting to turn off the HVAC system and use space heaters or other portable heaters during that time. But despite their small size, these heaters can consume an incredible amount of electricity - much more than a central HVAC system. These heaters can also be a fire hazard, especially older models or those without a working circuit breaker. Use the central heating system even if you expect the temperature to rise soon. It is better to lower the temperature manually or rely on a smart thermostat.
Use a smart thermostat
Overuse is one of the biggest risks to your heating system in unpredictable weather. If your HVAC system is constantly working, it will develop wear and tear problems much faster than if it is periodically shut down. Remember that rapid switching between heating and cooling modes can cause significant stress. Turn off the entire system for at least fifteen minutes before programming significant temperature changes.
The smart thermostat can do this from anywhere with a cellular connection. By programming your thermostat to run at a higher temperature (in the summer) and lower temperature (in the winter) when you're not home, you can reduce your energy bills and the frequency with which you turn your system on and off. Many programmable thermostats are designed to find the optimal system efficiency without you having to make any assumptions.
Check and replace filters if necessary
When your HVAC system has to pump air through dirty, dusty filters, it has to work harder. By cleaning these filters and replacing those that are starting to wear out, you'll give your system the ability to breathe freely. This will allow it to work more efficiently, and you will enjoy better air quality.
Take care of the regularity of maintenance
The change of seasons is the perfect time to schedule a tune-up with your HVAC contractor. Not only will this ensure that your system is ready for the winter cold or summer heat, but it will also help you get through the off-season more comfortably by minimizing any damage that may occur during use.
Having your HVAC system inspected annually by a professional is the minimum that every homeowner should do for their own comfort, and will ensure that a well-tuned system is running smoothly. If you're in Philadelphia and haven't had your HVAC system checked annually, contact us.
